Farm to School

Abbondanza feels strongly about educating children about where food comes from and getting our young ones into patterns of healthy eating. Our Farm to School initiative includes field trips, classroom visits, sponsoring meals into cafeterias and donating seeds to children’s gardens as well as creating edible gardens from which children gain the experience of planting and harvesting their own food in the form of salads, carrot sticks and corn tortillas! We have strived individually and cooperatively to gain ground in the national front – locally we have been fortunate to work with the Our Love of Children Foundation within Boulder County at Creekside Elementary to advance our goals within the Foundation’s School Well-Being Project. Additionally, we sit on a board, which is working to promote Farm to Cafeteria goals at a statewide level.

Did you know?

Organic farmers and experts in India organized to address the agriculture crisis facing the nation's 700 million farmers. Poor yields, degraded soils, and expensive chemical inputs arising from the cultivation of pesticide intensive crops, including genetically engineered cotton, have devastated India's rural economy. Crop failures and crushing debt led over 300 Indian farmers to commit suicide between May and July. To address this crisis, farmers from all over the country joined together August 2, 2006 to create the "Organic Vision 2020," a long term strategy to shift the country's farming focus back to ecological and traditional organic practices.

Quotes

"The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope."
~Wendell Berry
