What and Where?
The Thomas Open Space project is located at 1640 W. Baseline Rd in Lafayette between 95th and 287. The project is overseen by a group of staff and volunteers called the Thomas Farm Group. In short, the City of Lafayette put out a request for proposals in 2006, looking for a farmer to take on an organic (transitional) farm on city open space. Abbondanza answered the call and won a lease in the process. To learn more about how the city created this project go to the city’s website.

New happenings
TOS has been officially disked and planted with a cover crop of peas and oats with the help of an old town resident (talk about creating community!). The cover crop has a dual purpose… the first and primary is to feed the soil. As that crop grows and is eventually turned in it will act as food for the precious (and historically overworked) soils. This is a pretty neat process for novices of agriculture, it goes something like this… as that crop grows, and we feed it with organic matter the roots of those plants will work that nourishment into the soils. Additionally, the turning in of the green matter and its consequent breaking down acts as more food! The beauty of the cycles eh – and simply put… Meanwhile, the city has also been hard at work; they have officially brought water to the site. The installation of irrigation systems is the next big project on the to do list and is already in the final planning stages for implementation in April. Following this is:

The Great Planting!
Abbondanza’s summer crops will reside dominantly at Thomas Open Space. Watch peppers, tomatoes, corn, beans, squash, cucumbers, and many others (including a gorgeous display of colorful flowers) come alive roadside (and yes, there will be a farm stand)! Finally, it is not too late to join the Abbondanza CSA which we call Veggie Share. The benefits not only include the opportunity to support the local organic movement by picking a personal farm, and consequently sharing in the bounty… our CSA members will also enjoy a small discount on other locally created products which our farm stand will provide. Watch us grow.

Did you know?

Since 1945, crop losses due to insects have nearly doubled, but insecticide use has increased tenfold.

Quotes

"If a man walks in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer. But if he spends his days as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making the earth bald before her time, he is deemed an industrious and enterprising citizen."
~Henry David Thoreau
